Bounded by the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Chile is one of the most isolated, yet environmentally diverse, countries in South America. Spanning over 4300km (2700 mi.) from north to south (nearly half the length of South Amer ica), Chile averages only 177km (100 mi.) in width. Nevertheless, the range of geo graphic formations packed into this narrow country gives rise to an incredible mix of environments, from the arid desert regions of the north to the lush rolling farmland of the Central Valley to the rocky glacial fields of the south.
