Despite recent troubles, Bali and Kuta are still home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Lombok’s northwestern Gili Islands has smooth sands. Manado, at Sulawesi’s north tip, offers first-rate scuba diving. Pulau Nias off Sumatra draws a surfer crowd.
Cultural heritage
Yogjakarta is easily Java’s best city. Colorful Tana Toraja in Sulawesi throws killer funerals. Pura Besakih is the mother of Balinese temples. Bukittinggi and Padang showcase both the artistic and culinary culture of Sumatra’s Minangkabau people.
Hanging out
Hip Ubud on Bali has the best cafes and meditation workshops. Lombok’s Tetebatu and Sulawesi’s Rantepao all offer cool respite from the lowland heat. Lake Toba on Sumatra is an ethereal detour.
