Indonesia Customs and Etiquette

Adat, or common law, explains many Indonesian customs. Adat, originally rooted in religion and adapted over many years, is one of the few things that diverse Indonesians have in common. Though unwritten and unspoken, adat still remains an important code of conduct.

Friendliness is valued in Indonesia. Just keep smiling—Indonesians are known to hide negative feelings and avoid confrontation, rarely raising their voices. Indonesians also place less emphasis on punctuality than Westerners; travelers sometimes become frustrated with the country’s “rubber time.” Be patient, as it is considered disrespectful to show signs of annoyance.

CLOTHING
As Indonesia is largely an Islamic country, revealing clothes are inappropriate, especially if you plan to visit a mosque. Women should take special care to dress conservatively.

TABOOS
Avoid eating, passing dishes, and giving or receiving objects with the left hand, which is considered unclean. Though shaking hands is normal with introductions, never shake with the left. Indonesians regard the feet as the least sacred part of the body, so avoid pointing your feet at anyone. Conversely, don’t touch anyone on the head, even young children. Pointing with a forefinger is considered impolite. To beckon someone, extend your hand with the palm down and make a scratching motion with your fingers. Finally, remember that observant Muslims do not consume pork or alcohol, while Hindus avoid beef and leather.

TABLE MANNERS
Accept hosts’ offers of food and drink. Most dishes are eaten with the right hand. Forks and spoons are the main utensils; knives are rarely used. Leave a portion of your meal on your plate to signal your satisfaction with the meal. When entering an Indonesian’s house, remove your shoes if your hosts take off their
