BATIK AND OTHER CRAFTS
Batik, a world-renowned textile art of producing intricate patterns, often with animal motifs, is common throughout Southeast Asia. Originally done by hand, batik tulis is now made with a tool that holds a small amount of liquid wax and is used like a pencil to create designs on fabric. Various colored dyes are absorbed by the parts of the fabric not covered by wax. The cheaper batik cap is made with pre-patterned metal stamps dipped in wax and then pressed repeatedly onto fabric. Batik shirts are common formal dress for men; women often wear batik sarongs. Recently, batik paintings have become a popular art form. The best and cheapest batik paintings are around Yogyakarta; many galleries also give visitors a chance to make their own paintings. Ikat is a type of weaving in which already-dyed threads are woven into designs, while the rest of the fabric is dyed in a contrasting color. Traditional wood-carvings, from masks and life-size puppets to weapons and furniture, are uniquely reflective of Indonesia’s many cultures. In places where Hindu culture was strongest, metalworking recreates the ancient artifacts of moko, bronze kettle drums, and the legendary kris, a ceremonial sword. For those with a hankering for gold, silver, and semi-precious stones, Indonesian artists offer inexpensive and intricate jewelry.
