Though its name may imply hot and humid, Ecuador spans three disparate climates (coast, Sierra, and jungle) that keep things interesting. Nonetheless, two main seasons divide the Ecuadorian year: the dry winter from June to September and the wet summer from December to April. Along Ecuador’s Pacific coast, the sweltering heat reflects tropical norms, but bring a sweater—or twelve—for trips into the Sierra. The best time to visit the Highlands is during the winter, when clear skies make for drier and happier hiking. The jungle (called the “Oriente”), on the other hand, is always wet and warm, never below 77% humidity. The jungle can become utterly impenetrable during the rainy months (Dec.-Apr.).
In the Galápagos Islands, hot, rainy weather prevails from January through April, while the rest of the year is dry and cool, with the water a chilly 20°C (68°F) or lower. As expected, the temperature gets warmer farther north toward the equator. Ecuadorian coasts tend to be warm year-round. Here, the ideal visiting months are between seasons—March through May, when rainfall lightens, and November through December, when the temperature warms. Be aware that during the busy months of July, August, and December, prices for accommodations and transportation rise significantly. All things considered, the best month to visit is May: tourist traffic is light, the climate is moderate, and the seas are calm. For wave-lovers, the Galápagos surfing season is December through February. If you’re there for the animals, research nesting patterns to avoid disappointment.
Local festivals and holidays are another seasonal variation to keep in mind when planning your trip. Go for some crazy fun, but be prepared for crowded accommodations and lots of people. The most important nationwide holidays are Christmas, Semana Santa (Easter week), Inti Raymi (June 24), and Independence Day (May 24).
