Germany Gay and Lesbian Travel

Germany is a necessary pit stop for any gay globetrotter. A tolerant political climate makes Germany the perfect escape for same-sex couples looking to party under the rainbow flag, or singles of any orientation hoping to strike it rich on the international dating market.

Openly homosexual politicians in Germany have set a legacy of tolerance nation-wide. Karin Wolff, Minister for Culture and Education in the state of Hesse, has no problem holding hands with her girlfriend (who used to be her masseuse) in public. When running for office in 2001, Berlin’s current mayor Klaus Wowereit publically outed himself with the now-vogue phrase: “Ich bin schwul–und das ist auch gut so!” (“I am gay–and that’s a good thing!”). Same-sex sexual activity has been okay by the rulebooks since the late 1960s, and gay men and women have been allowed to serve openly in the military since 2000. In Germany, anything goes.

Check out our city by city coverage of gay-friendly Germany, with our hottest picks for Berlin, Frankfurt, Koln and Hamburg.
