Athens Exarhia

  • Kapnikaria Church, Just below ground level on the intersection of Ermou and Kalamiotou (☎210 32 24 462), Quaintly located in the heart of Athens, Kapnikaria Church is emblematic of the city's Byzantine structures. Set low in the street and surrounded by a short stone wall, this church's intricately shaped stone exterior is well-preserved despite the many decades that have passed since its construction in the 11th century. Inside, scaffolding from construction obstructs visitors' views of some wallpaintings, but those that are visible are golden and beautiful. If you only visit one church in Athens, this should be it. Wheelchair access.
  • Holy Trinity, Fillelinon 21A (☎210 32 31 090), Gilt-laden, the Holy Trinity is the largest of the Byzantine churches in Athens and easily accessible from Syntagma. With 1000 years of history, this church is still young relative to other sites of Athens. After being amazed by the giant chandelier in the church's center, don't miss a nook on the right that displays a fresco painted 850 years ago. Other than this piece, most of the paintings on the walls are from the 19th century. No wheelchair access.
