Cataluña has only one national park, and its snow-capped peaks and lush valleys merit a visit at some point in your itinerary. The Estany de Sant Maurici, the park’s largest lake, in the east and the winding cascades of the Ribera de Sant Nicolau in the west have earned the park the nickname “Aigües Tortes” (Twisted Waters). With more than 200 glacial lakes and over 102,300 acres to explore, the park and its surrounding protected reserves deserve at least two days on your itinerary. Be sure to bring warm clothes and appropriate trekking gear. Winters are long in the higher altitudes, and even some of the lowest passes can be snowbound until mid-June—seriously.
