Most monasteries close one day per week. Though most monasteries run on a 9am-5pm schedule, opening and closing hours vary from monastery to monastery and change often; consult the tourist office in Kalambaka for times. Even if a monastery is closed, it is still worth checking out, as the outside is often as spectacular as what’s inside. Photography is forbidden in certain areas, and modest dress is required. Generally this means no sleeveless tops for men or women. Women are required to wear a long skirt (though wraps are provided at the monasteries), while men should wear long shorts or pants. Most of the monasteries close midday, so many people decide to pack picnics, though there are food stands by Varlaam and Grand Meteora. (€2 per monastery, under 12 free.)
