What Let’s Go calls North London is actually a group of distinct neighborhoods, all of which lie to the north of Central London. Once the centers of London’s counter-culture movement, Camden Town and Islington are now slightly less ragingly punk. The former has kept some of its edge, with underground venues, a grunge vibe, and endearingly chaotic markets; the latter has gone boho, with posh restaurants, cute boutiques, and upscale pubs and clubs. Hampstead and Highgate still feel like small villages, but border the beautiful and expansive Hampstead Heath and are great for a day of window-shopping or picnicking. Saint John’s Wood and Maida Vale are wealthy, residential extensions of Marylebone and Bayswater. The Tube stops are Camden Town for (surprise) Camden Town, Kentish Town for Camden, Angel for Islington, and Kilburn and Swiss Cottage for St. John’s Wood and Maida Vale.
