Beyond Tourism
London currently has a booming theater enterprise, which is divided into three distinct parts: The West End, the National Theater/Globe Theater, and the Fringe. The theaters of the West End produce large, commercial favorites, and tickets range from 15 to 60 pounds. The National Theater is subsidized, so its productions are often slightly riskier, featuring unknown playwrights and actors. Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, renovated in 1997, is a thatched-roofed theater that runs throughout the spring and summer months. The Fringe produces smaller plays in pub theaters and clubs, and tickets are much less expensive than those of the West End’s theaters. London’s theater culture is another testament to the city’s constant change and expansion.
