Navigating The System. Most bus stops display a map of local routes and nearby stops together with a key to help you find the bus and stop you need.
HOURS OF OPERATION. Buses run approximately 5:30am to midnight; a reduced network of Night Buses (see below) fills in the gap. During the day, double-deckers generally run every 10-15min., while single-decker “Hoppers” leave every 5-10min.
NIGHT BUSES. Because the Tube closes around midnight, Night Buses are a necessary form of nighttime transportation (taxis can get quite pricey). Night Bus route numbers are prefixed with an N; they typically operate the same route as their daytime equivalents, but occasionally start and finish at different points. Buses that run 24hr. have no N in front. Most Night Buses operate every 30-60min. from midnight to 5:30am.
TICKETS. Bus and Night Bus fares are the same: £2, children 11-15 50p, children under 11 free; discounts on Oyster pre-pay. All tickets are good for traveling across the network and can be purchased at roadside machines or on the bus. Older buses still use conductors, who make the rounds between stops to collect fares. Keep your ticket until you get off the bus; otherwise you may face a £5 on-the-spot fine.
