WHITECHAPEL ART GALLERY. Reopened in Spring 2009 after doubling its size, this century-old gallery remains at the forefront of a buzzing East End art scene. Founded in 1901, Whitechapel was one of the first publicly funded galleries in London and served as an outlet for the area’s political ferment, artistic innovation, and social change. It has since showcased art from Africa, India, the Middle East, and Latin America, and in the 1950s and 1960s it was at the heart of the Pop Art movement. Now, it displays everything from 19th-century Impressionist masterpieces to modern and contemporary art. The gallery also features a brand new dining area and cafe, and hosts regular talks, seminars, and poetry and music nights. (Whitechapel High St. Aldgate East. ☎020 7522 7888; www.whitechapel.org.
