With the inspiration of a dramatic landscape ranging from lush lakes and mountains to stark, ocean-battered cliffs, Southwest Ireland is a place where artists and storytellers thrive. Its position as a backdoor to the isle also gives it a darker, more storied past; outlaws and rebels once struggled for power in hidden coves and glens, and the abundance of ancient forts and castles in the area is a testament to their legacy. Today, the urban activity of Cork City and the area’s frantic pace of growth balance the calm of neighboring rural villages. The Iveragh Peninsula’s Killarney and Ring of Kerry draw huge numbers of visitors every year, as they flock to some of the most stunning scenery in the world. The southern peninsulas of Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head, and the Beara, are equally beautiful, though not as busy. Not surprisingly, those who visit often decide to stay—real estate in western Cork is readily snapped up by foreigners who have fallen in love with its way of life.
