New York City Queens

Queens is by far the largest of the five boroughs in the area. At 109 sq. mi., Queens occupies about 35% of New York City. Connected to Brooklyn to the west through the town of Ridgewood, Queens is bordered by the East River to the northwest and north and Nassau County to the east. Both Brooklyn and Queens are on Long Island, which is just east of Manhattan. The Rockaway Peninsula, straddling Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, forms the southernmost part of Queens. The borough is a patchwork of distinct ethnic and cultural groups, and a four- or five-stop Subway ride will yield a completely different world. Ride the N or the W towards Astoria Ditmar Boulevard and you'll find yourself in the Greek village of Astoria. The A train toward Far Rockaway in southeastern Queens will take you to sleepy beaches. The F, E, J, or Z trains to the northeast will take you to the pan-Caribbean Jamaica. A northeast-bound trip on the 7 train will take you (from west to east) through the Bohemian Long Island City, the South Asian Jackson Heights, the largely Latino Corona, and the heavily Asian Flushing. In Flushing Meadows Corona Park you can find Citi Field, where the famous New York Mets play, as well as the Unisphere, the most prominent landmark of Queens. Both major airports, Laguardia to the North and JFK to the east, are also located in the borough. Queens is an intimidating place indeed, but it is also full of adventures just waiting to be taken.
