Tipping is more or less compulsory in the United States. Remember that service is never included on a New York bill, unless you're in a large party at a restaurant (six or more people) and the tip is noted on the bill. As a general rule, tip cab drivers and waiters 15-20%, coat-checkers $1, bellhops around $1 per bag, hotel maids $1 per day, and bartenders $1 per drink.
