Although the skyscrapers constructed in the 1940s seem to tell a different story, New York was hit hard by the Great Depression. Fortunately, the wartime and post-bellum periods led to an eventual economic resuscitation of the city. The millions of new wartime jobs that were created helped NYC get back on its feet, and as more and more WWII veterans returned to the city, it became necessary to expand the amount of housing available. Consequently, a housing development was created in Levittown, Queens to accommodate middle- to upper-class families. This popularized living outside the hustle and bustle of the city, and similar “Levittowns” soon popped up all over eastern Queens, and eventually America.
Thanks to the rebirth of Wall Street in the 1980s and the “dot com boom” that began in the early 90s, New York City has remained one of the major economic centers of the world.
