On September 11, 2001, great tragedy hit New York City. In the worst terrorist attack ever to occur on American soil, members of Al Qaeda flew two planes into the World Trade Center, killing nearly 3000 people, including 343 NYC firefighters. Although the city was shaken by this devastating loss, the event sparked an unprecedented spirit of camaraderie, unity, and patriotism—both citywide and nationwide. Though explicit discussion of 9/11 is rarer in the city today than it once was, the event continues to lurk just below the surface of New Yorker's collective consciousness. At Ground Zero, the gaping pit that once housed New York's tallest buildings, construction of the Freedom Tower has begun. The project has sparked controversy, but the structure will become the tallest building in the United States. A portion of the ruins from the Twin Towers will be preserved as a memorial to the victims.
