Amsterdam:

OTHER The Netherlands DESTINATIONS

Amsterdam Clothing And Jewelry

  • Studio 88, Gerard Douplein 88 (☎077 065 84; www.fashionstudio88.nl), Sometimes, it feels like no matter how cheap they might be, most of the clothes in Albert Cuypmarkt are never going to be a good deal because you'd never actually wear them. The clothes at Studio 88 might not be at the same rock-bottom prices, but for an overstock and sample store, it sells some very nice high-end pieces for a fraction of what they would ordinarily cost. It carries mostly women's clothes with a few racks of men's things in the back. Tram #16 or 24 to Albert Cuypstraat. Walk 1 block up and make a right onto Gerard Doustraat; the store is up ahead on the right. Prices vary by brand. Most shirts average around €20. Dresses around €40. Open M 1-6pm, Tu-F 11am-6pm, Sa 10am-6pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • SPRMRKT, Rozengracht 191-193 (☎033 056 01; www.sprmrkt.nl), Too cool for school (or for vowels, at least), this very large store in the Jordaan sells excruciatingly hip street-wear—think lots of black, well-cut bright shirts, etc. The store-within-the-store, SPR+, sells even nicer designer pieces. It stocks clothing for both men and women. Tram #10, 13, 14, or 17 to Rozengracht/Marnixstraat. Walk a few blocks on Rozengracht; the store is on the right. Open Tu-W 10am-6pm, Th 10am-8pm, F-Sa 10am-6pm, Su noon-6pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Vezjun, Rozengracht 110 (www.vezjun.nl), A small store that only sells clothing from independent, young Dutch designers. The clothes can occasionally be a little out there, but for the most part, they are well constructed, fresh, and modern—and you can be sure that no one else will be wearing the same thing at your next party. Tram #10, 13, 14, or 17 to Rozengracht/Marnixstraat. Walk a few blocks on Rozengracht; the store is on the left. Dresses €70-90. Open Tu-W noon-7pm, Th noon-8pm, F noon-7pm, Sa 11am-6pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • The Darling, Runstraat 4 (☎042 231 42; www.thedarling.nl), A girly, white-and-pastel store that sells well-priced dresses and other women's clothes by boutique European brands. Some are dreamy and lacy, others are more mod. Vintage pieces are available as well, plus some jewelry items. The store also sells cupcakes, the cherry on top of any shopping experience. Tram #13, 14, or 17 to Westermarkt. Make a right down Keizersgracht and then a right onto Runstraat. Dresses €30-40. Open M noon-6pm, Tu-W 10am-6pm, Th 10am-7pm, F-Sa 10am-6pm. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access.
  • Spoiled, Wolvenstraat 19 (☎062 638 18; www.spoiled.nl), Large, ultramodern space packed with men's and women's chic urban wear. The real draw is the massive denim bar, with dozens of brands of American and European designer jeans. You can browse through their denim menu or have the knowledgeable staff help you find your perfect pair. Tram #1, 2, or 5 to Spui/Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. Walk west to the far side of Herengracht, make a right, and then a left onto Wolvenstraat. Jeans from €80. Open M noon-6pm, Tu-W 10am-6pm, Th 10am-7pm, F-Sa 10am-6pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • V and D Department Store, Kalverstraat 203 (☎0900 235 8363; www.vd.nl), One of the large department stores in the Nieuwe Zijd, with a good selection of interesting, affordable brands. Excellent summer sales. Also sells house-wares, electronics, CDs/DVDs, etc. If you get peckish while shopping, pop into the store's amazing cafeteria, La Place. Tram #4, 9, 14, 16, 24, or 25 to Muntplein. You'll see the store from there. Prices vary by brand. Open M 11:30am-7:30pm, Tu-W 10:30am-7:30pm, Th 10:30am-9pm, F-Sa 10am-8pm, Su noon-6:30pm.
