Amsterdam:

OTHER The Netherlands DESTINATIONS

Amsterdam Markets

  • Albert Cuypmarkt, Albert Cuypstraat Stretching almost half a mile along the length of Albert Cuypstraat, this is the most famous market in Amsterdam. Need a motorcycle helmet, sundress, and cinnamon all in one afternoon? This is the place to go. The clothes are certainly hit-or-miss, but for produce or knick-knacks, it's a great option. On both sides of the street just behind the market, rows of stores sell similar items at slightly higher prices (though some of the stuff is quite a bit more wearable). Tram #16 or 24 to Albert Cuypstraat. Open M-Sa 9am-6pm. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Noordermarkt, Noordermarkt (www.boerenmarktamsterdam.nl), In the picturesque northern corner of the Jordaan, an organic market pops up every Saturday selling produce, cheese, baked goods, herbs, homeopathic remedies, and some hippie-esque clothes. Tram #3 to Nieuwe Willemstraat. Cross Lijnbaansgracht, walk up Willemstraat, make a right onto Brouwersgracht, and then another right onto Prinsengracht; the market is about a block down. Open Sa 9am-4pm. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Dappermarkt, Dapperstraat (www.dappermarkt.nl), A market that really exudes local flavor, this also blends old Amsterdam charm with the newer North African and Middle Eastern immigrant communities. Come to find vegetables, spices, cloth, furniture, clothes, and more—at prices that tend to be much cheaper than the more touristy markets in the center. It's near Oosterpark, just south of Plantage. Tram #3 or 7 to Dapperstraat. Open M-Sa 9am-5pm. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access.
  • Spui, Spui In the warmer months of the year, local and international artists flock here to sell their paintings, sculptures, etchings, and photographs. Even if you're not looking to buy, wandering through this marketplace is just like visiting an art gallery. Tram #1, 2, or 5 to Spui/Niuwezijds Voorburgwal. Walk just a tad south on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal to get to the square. Open daily Mar-Oct 10am-3pm. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access.
