Prague (Praha) Nové Město

  • Mosaic House, Odborů 4 (☎725 84 67 73; www.mosaichouse.com), Mosaic House, Prague's newest and most luxurious hostel, understands what makes hostels great: a restaurant/bar/stage-venue with live music, a carpeted lounge space with bean bags, and Wi-Fi that's fast and omnipresent. But what makes Mosaic the (pre-hooker) Tiger Woods of Prague hostels is how it improves the tiny annoyances of hostels. Bunks in large dorms have privacy curtains, lighting is indirect instead of overpowering, and the rooms have soft beds and bountiful power outlets. Even Mosaic's few faults come in pursuit of noble goals, like lights over-eagerly shut off to save power. Still, you gotta respect that this hostel has the only greywater heat recycling system in the Czech Republic. Hotel rooms are 4-star, which bodes well for hostel rooms, which are basically the same with bunks. B: Karlovo namesti. From the station, head north along the west edge of the park. At the northwest corner of the park, take a left at Odborů. Netbooks 40-50Kč per hr. Women-only room available. Non-smoking. 4 computers available 1Kč per minute. Breakfast 150Kč. • Miss Sophie's, Melounová 3 (☎293 303 0530; www.miss-sophies.com), A bit out of the way and a bit more expensive than the cheapest hostel, Miss Sophie's is nevertheless the best bang for your buck in Nové Město. Genuinely cool modern designs including mural-sized original artwork line the newly-painted walls. Steel and glass showers are classier than what you'll find in most hotels. With polished wood floors, comfortable leather couches, flatscreen TV, and DVD library, it's easy to forget this is an accomodation for budget travelers. C: IP Pavlova. Take 1st left from platform, then follow Katerinska to 1st right, onto Melounová. Wi-Fi included and 2 computers with Internet available. Kitchens in some rooms. Most staff members are students. Dorms 410Kč; singles 1150Kč. Apartment 1390Kč. Towels 30Kč. 5% discount with ISIC student card if booked online. 4% additional charge if you pay with a credit card. Reception 24hr. No curfew. • Chili Hostel, Pštrossova 7, 110 00 Praha 1 (☎60 311 9113; www.chili.dj), Chili Hostel can't be beat when it comes to price and community. Large, comfortable common rooms, kitchens, and dining areas play host to nightly multi-national pregames, supported by the front desk's ample beverage service. Rooms are bunk-heavy and lack adornment besides the occasional chair, but bathrooms are kept very clean and well-stocked. B: Národní trida. • Hostel U Bubeníčků, Myslikova 258/8, 120 00 Praha 2 (☎22 492 2357; Ububenicku.hotel.cz), Located both inside and on top of a restaurant, this 65-bed hostel doesn't charge extra for the smells of roast pork and sauerkraut, and will give you a 10% discount should you choose to investigate the source of those smells. Pastel-walled rooms are very comfortable thanks to free bedding more generous than the traditional sleep sack. Lucky visitors stay in rooms with polished wooden floors. B: Karlovo náměstí. From the station, take Resslova toward the river and then right on Na Zderaze and then left on Myslíková, the hostel will be on your right; it looks like a restaurant. Towels and lockers included. • Hostel Prague Lion, Na Zbořenci 6, 120 00 Praha (☎73 148 7936; www.prague-lion.com), This little hostel may be called the lion, but roaring won't be tolerated; it's ideal for couples or cranks who want things quiet. Drinking games not welcome. One computer is available with free Internet. Breakfast free when booked through whostelbooker.com; otherwise 90Kč. Hostel is small and tends to fill up; book at least a week in advance. No common spaces. Visitors must knock to enter. B: Karlovo náměstí. • Hostel Emma, Na Zderaze 267/10, 12000 Praha (☎774 807 787; www.hostel-emma.com), Hidden behind a raised bend in the road, Hotel Emma suffers from an identity crisis, torn between bare-bones dorm rooms with wireframe beds and opulent private rooms with TVs and full kitchens. The large, clean common room with a foosball table makes up for having to pay 30Kč for a towel and a 300Kč deposit for keys. One computer with Internet is available. B: Karlovo náměstí. From the station, head down Resslova street, then take your first right on Na Zderaze . Wi-Fi and lockers included. • The Welcome Praguecenter Hostel, Žitna 17, 11000 Prague 1 (☎22 432 0202; www.bed.cz), Possibly the worst-named hostel in the city, Welcome Praguecenter provides some impressively luxurious private rooms for, in some cases, dormitory prices. Located on the second floor of an apartment building, its rooms resemble apartments with glass tables and king-sized beds. Refrigerators and safe boxes are available in each room. Small bathrooms, and the lack of common spaces and a kitchen are the only downfalls of this hostel..except for the name, of course. B: Karlovo náměstí. From the station, head away from the river down Žitna. Reservations 1-2 weeks in advance recommended. Sheets and towels included. No breakfast. All private rooms. 400Kč for bed with shared facilites. 500Kč for bed with private facilties. Check-in 9am-9pm (call ahead if you'll be later). Check-out by 11:30am. No parties after 10pm. • Central Hostel, Sokolská 29, 120 00 Praha 2 (☎22 424 7412; www.hostel-centre.eu), Heroically living up to its name, Central Hostel offers forgettable but acceptable accommodations at a very central location and workable prices. By no means a bargain, Central does have carpets that add a level of”hominess” rare in any hostel. Additionally the rooms are very clean and each comes with free lockers. Common room has kitchen, refrigerator, laundry and TV. Definitely try elsewhere first, but given the recent closing of several hostels in the area, this is a valuable cheap—if not ideal—option. C: I.P. Pavlava. From the station, head towards the river on Jugoslávská 1 block, then turn left on Sokolská. Hostel will be on your right. Wi-Fi included. 1 computer with Internet access. €5 deposit for key. Very basic breakfast 56Kč. Dorms 400Kč; apartments 750Kč. Check-in whenever. Check-out 11am. Takes credit cards. Has internet. Serves alcohol.
  • Advantage, Sokolská 11, 120 00 Praha 2 (☎22 491 4062; www.advantagehostel.cz), The only real “advantage” offered by this low-frills hostel (with no kitchen!) is that it's closer to the train station than some of its competitors. That and free breakfast, towels, linens, Wi-Fi, and lockers. So there are a couple advantages, but there are much nicer places available for the same price. No central common area to speak of; lounge up front has three computers where you can pay to surf the Internet (is that still a thing people say?). The paint job in the rooms is a little loud, but they are very spacious and clean. C: I.P. Pavlava. From the station, head towards the river on Jugoslávská 1 block, then turn left on Sokolská. Hostel will be on your right after a short block. 20min. on comptuers free. 1Kč per min after. Dorms 400Kč, with private toilet 450Kč; singles 1000/1400Kč; doubles 550/700Kč. Check-in 8am-10pm (call if later). Check-out 10am. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access. Has internet.

Follow it around the corner; the hostel will be on your right. A little out of the way, but with comfortable, medium-sized dorms and an inviting, TV-equipped common room. The real selling points are the cottage-like private rooms opening out onto a garden. Breakfast included. Lockers with a 100Kč deposit. Towels with a 50Kč deposit. Laundry available. Free Wi-Fi. Parking 150Kč per day. Reception 24hr. Check-in 2pm. Check-out 10am. Dorms 400Kč; private rooms in shared garden-side apartment 850Kč, with personal bath 990Kč
  • Hotel Evropa, Václavské námĕstí (☎224 215 387; www.lou-evropahotel.cz), A or B: Můstek. From the metro, walk up the square toward the National Museum; the hotel will be on your left. Built near the turn of the century in the Art Nouveau style, Hotel Evropa is one of the most opulent and recognizable buildings along Wencelas Sq. While the beds themselves are small, even by Prague standards, each room is well furnished. Student-rate floor with slightly more modest though significantly cheaper amenities. Book ahead using the website listed, as student rates aren’t available at the reception desk. Free Wi-Fi. Check-in 1pm. Check-out 10am. Student rate singles 600Kč; doubles 900Kč. 10% discount for cash payment
  • Hostel Bontour, Myslíkova 22 (☎224 922 097; www.bontourhostel.cz), B: Karlovo námĕstí. From the metro, take Karlovo námĕstí north and then turn left on Odborů; the hostel is on the corner. Cheap rooms with few amenities close to the metro stop. Shared bathrooms. Linens included. Laundry available. Free Wi-Fi. Reception 10am-8pm. Check-in 2pm. Check-out 11am. Dorms 380; singles 1050Kč; doubles 1200. Dorms only available to those under 30
  • Hostel & Pension Le Papillon, Jungmannova 5 (☎606 854 123; www.papillon-hostel.cz), B: Národní třída. From the metro, take Charátova and then turn right on Jungmannova; the hostel is on the left through the big iron gate. In the middle of Nové Město commercial district and only a short walk from Karlovo námĕstí, Papillon’s location is definitely its major selling point. The dorms aren’t the nicest around, however, and the only single looks as if it had been designed by an eight year old girl, not that there’s anything wrong with that. Parking available in garage. Check-in 3pm. Check-out 10am. Dorms 318Kč; singles 800Kč
