Prague (Praha) Hradčany

  • U Zlaté Hrušky Save, Nový Svět 3 (☎220 514 778; www.restaurantuzlatehrusky.cz), Try the innovative goat cheese in a puff pastry, with arugula and bacon chips (290Kč) —and sail away to a far-off galaxy. The place has a terrace for every season, so even if you come in winter you can enjoy the crisp air and snowy landscape while noshing on beef carpaccio (290Kč). Not for the faint of wallet. Tram 22 or 23: Brusnice. From the stop, walk across the street to the leafy pathway, down the stairs, turn left at the 1st street after the hotel and walk until you see the restaurant terrace on your right. Soup 190Kč. Entrees 290-690Kč. Dessert 190Kč. Open daily 11am-1am. Takes credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning. Has outdoor seating.
  • Restaurace Nad Úvozem, Loretánská 15 (☎220 511 532), Tricky to find but worth the search—the view of Petřín Hill and the surrounding area is one of the best you can get. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, and you might even spot a real Czech person eating here on occasion. The menu majors in traditional Czech, with an emphasis in skewers (169Kč). Tram 22 or 91: Brusnice. From the tram, take U Brusnice south and then turn left on Loretánská. Turn and go down the stairs toward Úvoz; the entrance will be on your left. Entrees 159-279Kč. Daily menu 179Kč. Open daily 11am-11pm. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
  • U Císařů, Loretánská 5 (☎220 518 484; www.ucisaru.cz), This 13th-century cellar, complete with crossed swords and a boar's head, has served the likes of George H.W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, and Lech Wałęsa. Finally, a goulash worth splurging on (340Kč). Other specialties include roast duck in honey and ginger (420Kč) and pork sirloin stuffed with carrots and celery (440Kč). Tram 22 or 91: Brusnice. From the tram, take U Brusnice south and then turn left on Loretánská. No dress code per se, but you'd probably feel awkward in jeans and a T-shirt. Reservations recommended. Appetizers 210-230Kč. Entrees 340-550Kč. Open daily 9am-1am. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access.
  • Hotel Loreta Cafe Restaurant, Loretánské náměstí 8 (☎233 310 510; www.hotelloreta.cz), Trams 22, 91, Brusnice tram stop. From the tram, take U Brusnice south, turn right on Loretánská, and then right again on Loretánské náměstí. Reasonably priced and reasonably tasty. Just off the historic (read: old) and peaceful (read: boring) Loreta Square. Like most restaurants in the area, this one caters mainly to tourists. The outdoor seating is as nice as any. Most of the menu is probably too rich for traveler’s blood; stick to the baguettes (100-150Kč) unless you’re starving. Entrees 175-225Kč. Daily menu 239Kč. Wheelchair-accessible. Open daily 11am-11:30pm
