Prague (Praha) Žižkov

  • Palác Akropolis, Kubeliková 27 (☎296 330 912; www.palacakropolis.cz), Situated in a pre-WWII theater, this entertainment complex has become a landmark in the Žižkov area. The bar and cafe upstairs serve a mix of expats, local artists, and intellectuals, while the multi-level club downstairs has two bars, each with its own nightly DJ and a clientele that changes according to the music. Reggae night on Sunday is always well attended. The space also hosts concerts and regularly collaborates with a group of performance artists. A: Jiřího z Poděbrad. From the Metro, cross diagonally through the park and then take Milešovská; Kubelíkova is on the other side of the Žižkov tower park. Cover F and Sa 30Kč. Some concerts cost money; check online before you go. Beer 25Kč. Open daily 11am-1am. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning.
  • Bar Známá Firma, Husitská 19 (☎222 540 066; www.znamafirma.com), A trippy, bohemian bar with wild colors on the walls and perhaps the cleanest bathroom you will ever find in a place that serves more Pilsner than water. Nightly programs include live DJs and the occasional karaoke, complimented by an incessant loop of alternative jams in the background. Trams 5, 9, or 26: Husinecká. From the tram stop, follow Husinecká until you reach the sq. and then make a left at Orebitská, which will run into Husitská. Beer 30Kč. Open M-Th 4pm-2am, Th-Su 6pm-2am. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access. Has internet. Serves alcohol. Has outdoor seating.
  • Bukowski's, Bořivojova 86 (☎774 539 689), A designer bar with a literary flourish. Prides itself on using high quality beer and liquors for its signature mixed drinks like “the Naked Lunch” and “the Dorian Gray.” A relaxed atmosphere and stylish crowd make this a good place to get respectably sauced. Those who find themselves slipping past respectability can slow down with a smoothie (75Kč). If you hate waking up refreshed and rested on Monday mornings, head to “Sunday 7Kč beer night.” Tram 5, 9, or 26: Husinecká. From the tram, take Seifertova east, make a right onto Víta Nejedlého and then another right onto Bořivojova. Beer 30Kč. Mixed drinks 80-100Kč. Open daily 7pm-3am. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
  • Legendario, Jeronýmova 577 / 2 (☎602 800 444; www.barlegendario.ic.cz), Black leather cubes to sit on, zebra-print “paintings” and a glittery mosaic-tile trim welcomes locals and visitors alike for a night of steamy mingling in close quarters, but don't worry, it's not quite as Metro as it sounds. Mostly draws a relatively middle-aged and laid-back crowd, and is happening even on Sundays. Tram 5, 9, 6: Husinecká. Turn right on Husinecká then left onto Jeronýmova Beer from 35Kč. Open M-Th 6pm-1am, F-Sa 6pm-3am, Su 6pm-midnight. Does not take credit cards. Wheelchair access. Serves alcohol.
