Madrid Gay and Lesbian Travel

Madrid is home to one of the most popular gay areas in Spain, the Chueca district. It’s pretty easy to tell which locales are gay clubs (such as Escape or Queen), as they typically have the traditional rainbow signs outside the entrances. Berkana Libreria Gay y Lesbiana, C. Hortalez, 64 (tel: 91 522 55 99 www.libreriaberkana.com). This gay and lesbian bookstore in the heart of Chueca is an excellent source of information about GLBT events and parties throughout Madrid. Some titles focus on sexuality, but there are other options including poetry, religion, education, and even GLBT-friendly comics. From the Chueca Metro stop, turn around, make a right on C. Augusto Figuroa, and make another right onto C. Hortaleza. Prices vary. Open M-F 10am-9pm, Sa 11:30am-9pm, Su noon-2pm and 5-9pm.
Orgullo Gay, www.orgullogay.org. During Orgullo Gay, one of the biggest pride parades in Europe, Madrid explodes with GLBT-friendly celebrations, parades, parties, and more. Chueca, Madrid’s gay district, is particularly lively. Last week of June.
Studio 54, C. Barbieri, 7 (tel: 61 512 68 07 www.studio54madrid.com). Steps away from the Chueca Metro, this packed discoteca has enough beautiful people, booze, and beats to do the original Studio 54 proud. Filled with a mostly gay clientele dressed to the nines, this place is fun for anybody with an open mind. Women even get in for free sometimes, depending on the time and night. Cover €10. Open Th-Sa 11:30pm-3:30am.
Long Play, Plaza de Vázquez de Mella, 2 tel: 91 532 20 66). The DJ at Long Play spins upbeat Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Spanish pop that gets the packed dance floor moving. Most clubgoers are gay, but great jams and a lively atmosphere make it a fun time for everyone. Go to the upstairs bar for a break from sweaty dancing. Cover €10, includes one drink. Drinks €8. Open daily midnight-7am.
