Portugal is not quite the flourishing GLBT mecca of its Iberian counterpart, Spain, but gay rights and acceptance are growing. The first GLBT campaign was formed in 1992, and in 2004, the country became the first in Europe to illegalize discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The country holds Gay Pride marches in the larger cities, as well as the Festival de Cinema Gay e Lesbico de Lisboa during the last weeks of September. Other than these large events, though, the GLBT community keeps open displays of homosexual affection mostly hidden, as the country is still highly dominated by the population in the conservative countryside. So there is still a while to go before the Portuguese will fly the rainbow flag. If you can read Portuguese, visit http://portugalgay.pt/ for more information; if not, go to www.gayiberia.com/lisbon.
