Hamburg Shopping
Hamburg is the place to go for new music. The stomping ground for the Beatles still brings in talented, little-known musicians strumming on big-time dreams. Hamburg is full of fantastic record shops that showcase new talent.
If you're looking to take home something other than tunes, you can't go wrong with the boutiques crowding the Schanzenstraße. For women's clothing especially, this street is brimming with mid-priced buys and good quality, high fashion clothes, even if the price tags aren't dirt cheap.
- Hanseplatte, Neuer Kamp 32 (www.hanseplatte.de), This record store is located right next to the popular indie performing venue, Knust. Hanseplatte specializes in local bands, so whatever genre of Hamburg musicians took your fancy, you'll be able to find them here. U3, S21, or S31: Sternstanze. Records from €5, but prices vary considerably. Open M-F 11am-7pm, Sa 10am-6pm. Does not take credit cards.
- Burnout Recordstore, Beim Grünen Jäger 21 (www.burnoutrecords.de), Burnout's collection of punk rock, hardcore, and alternative music couldn't have less in common with its name. Browse through stacks of 50s and 60s tunes, surf and stoner rock, some secondhand, in this edgy store. The passionate and upbeat staff is willing to point you in the right direction. U3, S21 or S31: Sternstanze. Records from €4. M-F 11:30-7pm, Sa 12-6pm. Does not take credit cards.
