More in the Bodensee (Lake Constance) than on it, the tiny island of Lindau (pop. 24,000) embodies everything that this region has to offer, and does so to the extreme. The Alps loom large across the waters, and Switzerland and Austria are both visible and readily accessible from the shoreline. The innumerable cafes, souvenir shops, and harbor promenades, charming and calm in the early morning and late evening, are otherwise overrun by tourists rushing to catch the last boat back to Constance in the evening.
