As you make the (long, flat, and lonely) 600km drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie, your travel buddy is the incredible “Golden Pipeline,” an uphill pump system designed to get water from Perth out to the lucrative goldfields of Kalgoorlie. The traffic in Perth’s eastern suburbs can be frustrating and slow, but the tension melts away as you drive through the woodland and wildflowers of the Darling Range. By the time you reach the towns of Merredin and Southern Cross, the only traffic is swaggering road trains bearing farm equipment or livestock. Roadhouses are spaced no more than 150km apart.
For 52 years, we have published the world’s favorite budget travel guides, written entirely by students and updated every year. With pen and notebook in hand and a few changes of underwear stuffed in our backpacks, we spend months roaming the globe in search of travel bargains.
