Madrid Marketplaces

  • Plaza de San Miguel, Plaza de San Miguel, 2 (www.mercadodesanmiguel.es), This almost-open-air market sells fine meats, cheeses, flowers, wine, and miscellaneous gifts for an arm and a leg. The partially indoor A/C makes for a beautiful place to have a glass of wine and enjoy blue skies away from Madrid's summer heat, but inside the vibe is a bit like a Whole Foods, with produce that's every bit as expensive. At the Pl. de San Miguel, off the northwest corner of Pl. Mayor right beside the cerveceria. Prices vary. Open M-W 10am-midnight, Th-Sa 10am-2am, Su 10am-midnight. Takes credit cards. No wheelchair access. Serves alcohol. Has air conditioning.
  • Cuesta de Moyano, If you're looking for Spanish books, head to Cuesta de Moyano, the book marketplace on the southern edge of Retiro Park. Around 30 stalls set up shop every Sunday to sell secondhand finds and antique books. Come and browse the stalls to find some Spanish first editions or that new Clive Cussler book in foreign print before heading to an afternoon picnic in the park. Atocha. Cross Paseo del Prado and walk uphill. Retiro will be on your left. Open Su 10:30am-sunset. Does not take credit cards. No wheelchair access.
