Australia By Plane

Because Australia is such a large country, most travelers will end up taking a domestic flight during their trip. Australian “uni” holidays are the worst times to do so; tickets will be most expensive then. Fares between big cities are cheapest and most convenient, but many flights run to smaller airports.

  • Qantas (☎13 13 13; www.qantas.com.au). Frequent flights between major cities and other destinations. Booking fee of $27.50 when reservations are made through telephone sales, Qantas outlets, and airports. Cheapest to purchase online.
  • Rex (Regional Express) (☎13 17 13, elsewhere ☎02 6393 5550; www.rex.com.au). Specializes in domestic travel across Australia, and offers more destinations than most other airlines.
  • Virgin Blue (☎13 67 89, elsewhere ☎07 3295 2296; www.virginblue.com.au). Sizeable selection of destinations, but slightly more expensive.
