Those with disabilities should inform airlines and hotels of their disabilities when making reservations; some time may be needed to prepare special accommodations. Call ahead to restaurants, museums, and other facilities to find out if they are wheelchair-accessible. Guide-dog owners should inquire as to the quarantine policies of Australia.
After the 2000 Sydney Olympics and Paralympics, many locations in Australia (particularly the east) became wheelchair accessible, and budget options for the disabled are increasingly available. However, disabled travelers intending to use public transport should be wary: some of Australia’s trains have extremely narrow corridors and will require a collapsible wheelchair (see Getting Around Australia). Those looking to visit national parks should check the availability of wheelchair-accessible paths. Most parks try to maintain at least a few universal access trails, but some will only have one or two.
