Australia Minority Travelers

Some would classify the majority of Caucasian Australians as racist in their attitudes toward Indigenous Australians, and this assessment may not be unfounded. Black travelers and other travelers of color may get a few stares or encounter some hostility in more remote Outback areas. As is the case in most parts of the world, cities tend to be more diverse and tolerant than far-flung, less populated destinations. Yet even Sydney has had recent troubles, most notably during the 2005 Cronulla Riots, which garnered international attention when Caucasian youths clashed with youths perceived to be Middle Eastern. This was the most recent manifestation of the protests aimed at Muslim Australians that have brought issues of race relations back to the big cities. That said, Australia, like many nations, continues to deal with the advantages and disadvantages of a diverse populace. Increased tourism with its Asian neighbors has improved Australia’s reception of Asian travelers, especially in the east.
