On the northwestern coast of Lake Garda, jagged mountainsides dive deeply into the waters of Limone’s (lee-MO-neh; pop. less than 1000) shores. Many adventurers come to windsurf or kayak, and Limone’s small centro caters to tourism and provides a wonderful starting point for hikes to the surrounding mountaintops. Above all, Limone is best recognized as the lemon capital of Europe. Over the past thirty years, Limone has garnered the curiosity of scientific researchers who found a protein, Apolipoproteina A-1 Milano, unique to Limone locals. The wonder protein seems to naturally combat heart plaque in these lucky residents—or maybe it’s just the beautiful views.
