With sloping terraced vineyards and sharp cuts of the Nahe estuary on the western bank, it is little wonder that Rüdesheim is the most touristed town in the Rheintal. Still the center of the Rheingau wine-producing region, Rüdesheim was so well loved by the ancient Romans that they hung around as unwanted visitors for a few hundred years before the Franks displaced them in the fifth century. Large portions of this Arcadian village escape the unrelenting search for marketable nostalgia; narrow back-alleyways lie untouched, and all but the most conveniently placed castles remain largely unvisited.
