As the only town with train access and home to the largest port in the region, Desenzano (deh-sen-ZA-no; pop. 23,000) is the gateway to Lake Garda. It also holds extensive shopping and nightlife that is unavailable in most of its quieter neighboring towns. With lovely pedestrian streets, good restaurants, and a weekly lakeside open-air market, this town never lets a traveler down.
