Situated on the southwestern tip of Lake Como, closest to Milan, Como (CO-mo; pop. 86,000) is the lake region’s comparative metropolis, where physicist Alessandro Volta (who brought us the battery) was born and where Giuseppe Terragni immortalized his fascist architectural designs. Como is a livelier, more youthful city than others on the lake, with visitors coming for the cutting edge shopping, eateries, and nightlife. For those interested in nature, Como’s nearby hiking is more than enough to entertain those passing through.
