An easy daytrip from Trent, the town of Rovereto (ro-veh-REH-toh; pop. 35,858) offers picturesque views at every turn, but without crowds of camera-toting tourists. Cobblestone alleys weave around frescoed buildings, decorative stone fountains dot the piazze, and mountain breezes waft delicately through the streets. Rovereto offers the best of both worlds: while the surrounding countryside offers opportunities for biking, hiking, walking, and horseback-riding, the Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, or Il Mart, houses the largest collection of modern art in Italy and is the centro’ s star attraction.
