Nordfjord runs north of the ice-blue expanse of Jostedalsbreen glacier. The region was formerly less popular than Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord, but Jostedalsbreen National Park has attracted many visitors to the area in recent years. Although solo trips onto the glacier are tempting, it has dangerous soft spots and crevasses. Stryn serves as a major hub for essential guided tours.
Stryn. The Stryn municipality has three ideal base towns for exploring the area: Stryn, Olden and Loen. Stryn (pop. 2000) is a departure point for adventures around the Briksdalsbreen glacier and on the Bødal Glacier, both of which are branches of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. A bus (76kr) runs from Stryn’s bus terminal to the base of Briksdalsbreen, via Olden (daily June-Aug. 9:30am, returning 1:40pm) and to Sande Camping, the starting point for Bødal Glacier exploration. Briksdal Breføring AS Adventure (☎57 87 68 00 www.briksdal-adventure.com) runs raft trips through the ice patches around the glacier. It also runs glacier guiding trips on Bødalsbreen (5-6hrs., 10:00am) and hikes on Lodalskapǻ.
