Grado (GRA-doh; pop 8700), an island beach resort renowned for its terme (thermal) spas, and Aquileia (ah-kwee-LAY-ah; pop. 3300), named a UNESCO world heritage sight for its extensive Roman ruins, lie at opposite ends of the Italian vacation spectrum. However, they’re only 15km apart and linked by frequent buses, so visitors can take a dip in the Adriatic on Grado’s sloping coast and explore the ruins of Aquileia’s ancient port in the same day.
