Minutes from the Danish border, Nordic Flensburg (pop. 75,000) has some of the best sailing in Germany, and bills itself the shopping center between Hamburg and Copenhagen. Spared from all but two bombs in WWII, the city’s medieval architecture and churches remain in near-perfect condition. In 1945, Flensburg played reluctant host to an SS army on the cusp of surrender, briefly making the city the Nazi provisional capital. On curving cobblestone pedestrian streets, crowds of young Germans and Danes take in of the city’s cosmopolitan flair over home-brewed Flensburger Pilsener.
