One of the oldest towns in Northen Europe, Schleswig has held the Schlei River in its horseshoe embrace since around AD 800. Over the centuries, Schleswig was strengthened by the Vikings and the Gottorfer dukes, small-time nobles who shacked up in a showy island castle. Though the grandeur of the past is now confined to museums, and the swords of the Vikings are sheathed under meters of earth, Schleswig remains a careful steward of its cultural heritage.
