The first thing to know—and we hope you’ve already realized this; if you haven’t, you might want to sit down—is that Buenos Aires is in the Southern Hemisphere. Hence, the seasons are the reverse of those up in the Northern Hemisphere. Relatively moderate, the weather in Buenos Aires fluctuates from season to season, though it’s enjoyable all months of the year. The city is at its most pleasant during the fall and spring months, between March and May and September through November, but there’s often more rain during these months (for weather specifics, see Appendix). During the summer, more hotels are booked, and many city-dwellers head to beach resorts such as Mar del Plata and sandy spots in Uruguay , as temperatures average around 28˚C and spike to 40˚C in January. During the Argentine winter, temperatures drop as low as 0˚C, but the rain abates. If you’re going north to Iguazú , the most tropical region in Argentina, go during the winter (June-August) when you won’t have to bring ice packs and a spray bottle to keep cool.
