San Marino (san ma-REE-no; pop. 30,000) is one of two independent states inside Italy—the other is the Vatican. Officially titled the Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino (“The Most Serene Republic of San Marino”), it was founded in AD 301 by Marinus, a pious stone cutter who fled to Mt. Titano to escape the advances of an overly affectionate girl. The winding cobblestone streets of San Marino may be wrought with jewelry shops and piadinerie aimed at roping in the busloads of daily tourists, but this stifling commercialism is more than made up for by stunning views of rolling hills and the patchwork countryside.
