The magnificent gorge and medieval walls that surround Spoleto (spo-LEH-toh; pop. 38,000) shelter a town full of Roman ruins and friendly locals. Travelers have always admired Spoleto’s dramatic gorge, spanned by the 14th-century Ponte delle Torri, but it wasn’t until 1958 that Spoleto’s tourist industry took off. In that year, the Italian composer Giancarlo Menotti selected the city as the trial site for a summer arts festival, and his Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) has attracted summer visitors there ever since.
