Buenos Aires is a paradise of cheap, yet well-equipped and comfortable, short-term accommodations. Dorms for as cheap as US$10-20 per night? Not a problem. Furthermore, thanks to the favorable exchange rate, hotels that would normally be too expensive for the budget traveler are as pricey as some hostels across the pond in Europe. There’s no one hotbed for particularly affordable, top-notch rooms—they’re scattered throughout the city, from the center to Palermo and San Telmo. Puerto Madero, Recoleta, and Retiro, though, are often too expensive for penny-pinching globetrotters, while La Boca is too smelly and dangerous. For long-term accommodations, many of BA’s hostels offer unbeatable monthly rates, but if you’re looking for something more akin to home for even longer stays (hello, study- and work-abroad travelers), there are several resources for searching for inexpensive apartments.
