Buenos Aires Microcentro

  • Praxis, Arenales 1311 (☎4813 8639; www.praxis-art.com). With branches in New York and Miami, Praxis has worked since the 1970s to take Argentine art to the international arena. The gallery has four floors in a futuristic, minimalist set-up, with exhibits from furniture to etchings. Open M-F 10:30am-8pm, Sa 10:30am-2pm.
  • Galería Rubbers, Av. Alvear 1595 (☎4816 1864; www.rubbers.com.ar). S Callao. Rubbers opened in 1957 with an exposition of works by Xul Solar and continues to display big-name artists, like Colombian painter Roberto Botano, and the first exhibition of Andy Warhol in Latin America. Open M-F 11am-8pm, Sa 11am-2pm.

Classical Music And Opera

  • Teatro Colón, Libertad 621 (☎4378 7344; www.teatrocolon.com.ar). S Tribunales. Argentina’s premier opera house offers world-class opera and ballet productions and the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra. The theater is currently under renovation as of summer 2008, with reopening targeted for the 2010 season. Tickets must be purchased at the box office. Foreigners are usually charged a much higher price than Argentines. Bring an Argentine friend! Box office open M-F 9am-5pm. Tickets AR$15-70.

Live Music And Concerts

  • Teatro Gran Rex, Corrientes 857 (☎4322 8000). S Carlos Pellegrini. This large venue seating over 3000 shows musicals, theater, and national and international bands such as Coldplay and Interpol. Tickets are usually purchased online through Ticketex.
  • Estadio Luna Park, Bouchard 465 (☎5279 5279; www.lunapark.com.ar). S LN Alem. This massive venue on the edge of Microcentro puts on Disney ice shows, concerts, boxing matches, and other spectacles, including major Argentine bands, like the Babasonics, and popular international acts such as Joss Stone and Dream Theater. Tickets AR$30-400. Box office open M-Sa 10am-7:30pm.

Tango

  • Confitería Ideal, Suipacha 384 (☎4322 1653). S Carlos Pellegrini. Offers a wide range of tango events on the cafe’s 2nd fl. . Excellent classes for beginners through advanced students are offered daily, usually starting in the early afternoon. After the classes, experienced dancers take over, turning the space into a milonga. There are then dinner and tango shows virtually every evening beginning sometime between 8 and 10:30pm. Check the stands in the front of the cafe for the week’s schedule.

  • T-A-Ngo. Having trouble picking up the steps? Since the most basic tango involves two slow steps followed by three faster ones, repeating T A NGO as you do the steps can help you keep the rhythm. Or at least distract you from your maladroit jerkings.

Theater

  • Teatro General San Martín, Corrientes 1530 (☎0800 333 5254; www.teatrosanmartin.com.ar). S Uruguay. This large theater has numerous auditoriums showing dance and music performances, as well as contemporary and traditional theater. The building also hosts art and photography exhibits. Box office open 10am-10pm, or buy tickets online.
  • Teatro Opera, Corrientes 860 (☎4326 1335). S Carlos Pellegrini. A beautiful old Art Deco theater with a wide variety of productions from tango and modern dance to classical and contemporary music. Box office open daily 10am-8pm.
  • Teatro Presidente Alvear, Corrientes 1654 (☎4373 4245; www.teatrosanmartin.com.ar). S Callao or Uruguay. A variety of theatrical and musical productions at this theater with one large auditorium. Box office times variable; check online for times and tickets.
  • Teatro la Plaza, Corrientes 1660 (☎6320 5300). S Callao or Uruguay. A small theater that puts on comedic productions and contemporary and traditional theater. Also shares a building with several art galleries.
  • Teatro el Vitral, Rodríguez Peña 344 (☎4371 0948). S Callao. This small independent theater focuses on contemporary productions and alternative theater, including musical comedies and improv. Tickets from AR$20.
  • Teatro del Pueblo, Roque Sáenz Peña 943 (☎4326 3606; www.teatrodelpueblo.org.ar). S Carlos Pellegrini. One of the first independent theaters in Argentina and South America. Hosts small, modern productions.
