Buenos Aires:

OTHER Latin America DESTINATIONS

Buenos Aires Once And Abasto

For bargain-hunters, this is the perfect alternative to shopping in the city center. One of the sub-neighborhoods of Balvanera, Once , really just a system of streets around a train station, hosts a slew of outlet stores and cheap shops where 20 to 50 pesos will buy you pretty much anything from jeans and jackets to that fake Boca Juniors shirt you’ve always wanted. Heading down Avenida Pueyrredón from Recoleta into Balvanera, both sides of the street are lined with shops, and once you reach the train station, the street turns into a virtual outdoor market. The clothes may not be of the best quality, but that can’t really be expected at these low prices.

  • Shopping Abasto, Av. Corrientes 3247 (☎4959 3400; www.abasto-shopping.com.ar). S Carlos Gardel. This massive 19th-century Art-Deco shopping center housed one of the city’s produce markets until 1984, when the market was moved out of the city center and the building was left vacated. In the 1990s, new buyers transformed the market into the city’s largest shopping complex, complete with a miniature theme park called Neverland. Yes, Neverland. We will not make the obvious joke. Open daily 10am-10pm.
