Cagliari Overview

Since the Phoenicians founded the ancient port town of Korales over two millennia ago, several great civilizations have competed for possession of what is now known as Cagliari (CAL-ya-ree; pop. 158,000), Sardinia’s largest city and capital. In the 11th century, after defeating the Genoese, the Pisans built the fortified town of Castrum Kolaris, which became one of the most important artistic and cultural centers on the Mediterranean and was later renamed Cagliari. While the city maintains its rich history through its still-functioning Roman amphitheater, Cagliari also incorporates features of modern urban design like the Bastione di San Remy, which offers panoramic views of the port and surrounding territories. If you tire of the throbbing pulse of city life, a 20min. bus ride will transport you to the green water and beachside nightclubs of Il Poetto, one of the most frequented stretches of beach in Sardinia.
