When the Arabs invaded Sardinia in the 12th century, the conquerors founded Castelsardo (cah-stel-SAR-doh; pop. 5,679) and left their mark on Sardinia’s history forever in the form of the Sardinian flag—four Arab men in white bandanas. Fluttering proudly over the castle’s towers, the flag standing sentinel over the expansive sea below. Chill in the centro storico at the base of the castle after the endurance-testing hike to the top, or soak up the sun on the rock-strewn beaches a few kilometers down the road in Lu Bagnu.
