It’s not immediately clear to new arrivals that Santa Teresa di Gallura (SAN-ta Te-RAY-sa dee ga-LOO-ra; pop. 5000), poised on a hilltop, is in fact near water. But as soon as you crest the hill in the middle of town, the sparkling blue sea will assure you that your bus ticket was well worth the cash. With its narrow streets, social piazze, and unbeatable ocean vistas, Santa Teresa is an ideal base for exploring the natural wonders of Capo Testa, a peninsula of wind-sculpted granite with magnificent beaches. Santa Teresa boasts its own sandy beach, Rena Bianca, awarded the prestigious “Blue Flag” for its superior water quality and environmental consciousness. Watch the sunset over the sea from the hill’s crest, where the shores of Corsica are visible in the distance.
